Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) was one of the most celebrated composers of the Romantic period and the first Russian composer to achieve lasting international recognition. His music combines melodic immediacy, emotional depth, and brilliant orchestral color, resulting in works that remain among the most beloved in the classical repertoire.
His output spans nearly every major genre of the nineteenth century, including symphonies, concertos, operas, chamber music, piano works, and, above all, ballets that transformed the history of the genre.
