Among the many terms that shape the language of musical performance, few are as closely associated with expressive freedom as rubato . Derived from the Italian phrase tempo rubato (“stolen time”), the term refers to the subtle modification of tempo within a musical phrase, allowing the performer to shape the flow of time according to expressive needs. The image suggested by the word itself is revealing. Time is metaphorically “borrowed” from one moment and returned at another, preserving the larger rhythmic balance while introducing flexibility into the musical surface.
