Historical Formation and Liturgical Context Anglican Chant is a distinctive form of psalm recitation that developed within the liturgical tradition of the Church of England and became organically linked to the English-language rendering of the Psalms and biblical texts. Although its roots can be traced to medieval psalm-tone practices, the form as it is recognized today took shape primarily from the 17th century onward, in close connection with the post-Reformation consolidation of Anglican worship. The establishment of the Book of Common Prayer created the need for a stable, intelligible, and collectively performable method of chanting the Psalms.
